Sacral Art of the Roman Catholic Church of the 15th – 19th century

Ukrzyżowanie (fragment), około 1530 r., Mrzygłód

The Crucifixion (fragment), c. 1530, Mrzygłód

The collection of sacral art exhibits of the Roman Catholic Church unfortunately is not sizeable and for this reason their review is limited. They come from old churches and wayside shrines and they are mostly from Przemyśl diocese. These works of art were created by anonimous artists, but possibly future research let us connect some of them with definite workshops.

Gothic. The oldest exhibit belonging to this collection is a stone baptismal font dated to the 2nd half of the 15th century, which comes from St Michael’s Gothic Parish Church in Sanok, but it did not exist to the present day. The Sarmatic portrait of the 17th – 19th century

Portret krola Jana III Sobieskiego, ok. 1685 r.

Portrait of Jan III Sobieski, c. 1685

Picturesque paintings from the 17th-19th century occupy an important place in the Historical Museum collection. Portrayed people were connected with the Sanok region due to their provenance, status and family relations. The old Polish name “konterfekt” (a present name: an effigy or a portrait) is usually limited to a head or a bust. However, it can also present some person to a waist, knees or in a full length form. Depending on the current fashion and the ideal of beauty we can find idealistic, realistic and representative portraits. Continue reading “The Sarmatic portrait of the 17th – 19th century”

Pokucka Pottery

Plate from Pokucka pottery collection, 19th – 20th century

The Pokucka pottery collection, which embraces 360 exhibits is a very thought-provoking collection in the Historical Museum in Sanok. It was given to the museum by Aleksander Rybicki in 1979 and 1980. A. Rybicki was a collector and a great art lover. Thanks to him our museum has a possibility to show the greatest collection of Pokucka pottery in Poland, the one which shows a variety of artistic forms and specific local colour of Pokucie region. Modern Art

Ekspozycja zbiorów sztuki współczesnej

Exhibition of modern art collection

The main part of the modern art collection are the works of art made by Polish artists in France. That kind of collection character was determined by a marvellous gift, which was donated by Franciszek Prochaska (1891-1972) to the Historical Museum in Sanok. The artist, who came from Sanok, after short studies in The Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under the supervision of Józef Pankiewicz and participation in the First World War in Józef Piłsudski’s legions, moved to France as a military attache in 1920. Józef Pankiewicz had a basic influence on Franciszek Prochaska, when we talk about forming his painting in the convention of painting in which the colour is decisive (the colourists’ painting). Apart from the painting, Prochaska was also interested in graphics, like: woodcut, cooperplate and etching. Continue reading “Modern Art”
