Artur Nacht-Samborski (1898-1974) is one of the most outstanding artist of the 20th century. In 1918-1924 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow in the ateliers of J. Mehoffer, W. Weiss and F.S. Kowarowski. At that time he also remained in the avant-garde circle in Berlin and Vienna. Nacht, who was on friendly terms with the group of Józef Pankiewicz’s students, formed with them the Paris Committee (KP) and went to France. After the war he was one of the founders of so-called Sopot School and the Professor at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Sopot and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Nacht, in his artistic creativity, was searching for the highest quality of painting expressed by a colour and the emotional way of art expression. What is more, the artist, who was keeping his distance from the art styles of the 20th century, found his own independent artistic language. The exhibition of Artur Nacht-Samborski’s works in the Historical Museum in Sanok consists of 65 portraits and nudes date back to the post-war period. All these works of art show diverse way of a human figure presentation. Due to the various means of expression one can find in this painting wide range of feelings and emotions – from tragedy to beauty, from sensitiveness to irony.
The exhibition is associated with the catalogue-album. In mentioned publication there are reproductions of all Nacht’s works presented in the Sanok Castle and texts wrote by Małgorzata Kitowska-Łysiak and Wiesław Banach, the curator of the exhibition.
